This photograph comes from Volume I of the 1899 book "Our Islands and Their People" presented by Major-General Joseph Wheeler of the United States Army. These books were written to introduce the American people to the places newly acquired after the war with Spain.

All the girls go barefooted and dress usually in a single garment. Some of them are quite beautiful, and all have bright, intelligent faces.
